17条毕业生越早知道越好的职场提示
3 years ago I started my first full-time job with my current company. When I was then a fresh graduate without much industrial experience, like what the Cantonese phrase depicts the best (撞板) – I was regularly “hitting the wall” here and there (making mistakes). Thankfully throughout these few years I met a number of absolutely amazing bosses / mentors and buddies, they shape up my professional life with numerous invaluable guidance and coaching.
Since not everyone is privileged to have these mentoring sessions, I feel that it’s my obligation to share what I learnt (am still learning and practising!), especially with new graduates who are young, talented and brilliant.
Here you go the career tips which I find them most useful and practical (not everything is applicable to you so pick what works for you okayz) – good luck with your career!

1. Your job is to make everyone else’s life easier
You are here to solve problems, not create them.

2. Make your boss look good, your team look good, yourself look good
Do something which will bring positive impacts to yourself, your team, your boss. Never do something which will hurt anyone’s image, feelings.

3. If you keep thinking you are a graduate (intern / newbie), everyone else will treat you like one
No need to feel inferior when compared to other experienced peers, you have your values to add.

5. Attitude is the master key
It’s okay if you are not an expert (yet), we can train you if you are willing to learn, hardworking, proactive… you know what I mean.

6. Manage expectation
a. Clarify the timeline, requirements and expected results, do not make assumptions. If boss says get it done soon, check with her/him “when” exactly – end of day? Tomorrow evening?
b. Always set a deadline with your stakeholders.

7. Play football, not rugby
When any query / issue comes to you, pass it on to someone else or resolve it (goal it). Do not let the emails park in your mailbox for long without responding.

8. Always follow up

15. Engage with corporate activities outside of your day job
Corporate activities give you visibility to others and build your profile, but do remember that you are still measured by your job performance.

16. You are right only when you have a job
Be compliant to the laws and regulations, follow company rules and framework. There is no point to prove to someone that you are right when you are fired.

17. Always strive for excellence
It’s easy to do a great job once in a while; the challenge is to be consistent.
