How to Prepare for PMP Exam with 100-hour of Effort

If you have browsed online about how others prepared for PMP® probably you might be startled like I did: 3-5 times of leafing through PMBOK®; numerous sets of test questions; munching Rita’s guide.. that easily totalled to 3-4 months or >300 hr of study. Really??

I had only 35 days to study since the day I scheduled my exam. I thought I was doomed to fail it but I managed to pass PMP exam with 100hr of study. Besides favoured by exam luck, this is how I did it.

High Level Effort

  • Glanced through PMBOK® Guide
  • Did a sample test to gauge test difficulty level and exam scope
  • Started memorizing knowledge areas and processes
  • Studied glossary and definition
  • Studied PMBOK® Guide again; focus on ITTOs and drew mind-maps
  • A few more sample tests (3-4 sets)

Tip #1: Always go by definition

The exam questions are tricky sometimes and they might put a long paragraph to distract you. The gist is to understand the definitions and solve questions based on that. The glossary available as PMBOK® Guide’s appendix is really handy.

For example question below:

The answer is choice #1. Key points here:

  • You just got involved (ie you are newly appointed as PM)
  • Only basic decisions available

These make it very obvious that it’s at Initiating process group. Only 2 processes fall within this, hence it’s easy to pick “develop project charter”.

Tip #2: Find patterns in ITTOs and understand them

There are total 47 processes, are you sure to memorize all of their ITTOs? What I did was compiled my own 13-page ITTO cheat sheet, linked them with processes in different chapters and tried to find patterns in ITTOs.

Example of linking process inputs and outputs

Example of finding pattern

Project Management Plan is only input to Planning and Monitoring & Controlling process groups, Risk Register is only used for estimating cost and schedule; etc.

Tip #3: Start sample test early

Try first sample test as early as possible. Find out how the test scope look like and get a feel of how detailed the questions will be. You will be shocked at how much you don’t know even you have flipped through the guide book multiple times!

Now sit back and relax. Good luck for your exam!
