WIP #5: First 2 Weeks At Work

Congratulations on your job offer! Excellent! Now that you have got a brand new career ahead of you, what to do during the first 2 weeks in your new company?

  1. Prepare A Short Introduction

You are going to introduce yourself again and again, craft a simple yet interesting introduction about yourself. Rehearse a few times, you should sound pretty natural in it and not acting at all. First impression counts, make it a great one!

  1. Meet Your Colleagues

This includes meeting your boss, boss’s boss, your peers in the same team, everyone in your department and all 1st-degree connections with your team. Make some personal connection with them. Remember their names, 1-2 special things about them, their origin / family. I have problem remembering people’s details, usually after meeting someone I just jot down on my notebook some description about her. It helps big time! If you cannot meet all of them in person, send them a simple intro email. Remember, network is gold and visibility is diamond!

  1. Schedule 1-to-1 Meetings

This is not so much about networking, this is so important to plan your career progression. Make sure to have regular discussion with your direct manager, I’ll suggest at least half an hour on bi-weekly basis. You might want to check in regularly with your boss’s boss too; perhaps once a month is sufficient. During 1-to-1 you discuss about career progression, issues encountered, career aspiration. You don’t talk about daily BAU (business as usual) tasks. Ask for feedback about your work. Ask your manager what are her/his priorities.

  1. Setup Job Priorities

At your first 1-to-1 meeting with your manager, go through what are the priorities / deliverables expected in the next 1 month. Identify top 3 key areas, top 3 tasks, and discuss a timeline with your manager. Check if you have all the resources required to deliver the tasks, if not request for them.

  1. Setup Training Plan

In the same first discussion with your manager, discuss what are the areas for improvement and setup a plan. It might look like this:

Area for Improvement Objective Training Materials Complete By
Communication Enhance email writing skills Company internal portal 5 Feb 2018
Report and analysis Improve excel skills

Pick up presentation skills

  1. Go Through Organization Chart

Maneuver the organization. Understand the organization as a whole, at high level what are the departments and their connection in between. Usually if you work in a big company, there should be an internal portal for org chart. If not, ask your peer to guide you on this. And draw a simple org chart after that!

  1. Schedule Lunch Plan

Schedule lunch with your peers and your boss. This is the best chance for you to find out more about your company culture, things that they wouldn’t talk about in the office. Think about eating alone? No no!
