WIP #7: 6 Smart Tips To Win At Work

There is this term called “street-smart”, but so many don’t understand what exactly does that mean or how to be one at work. Apart from having some common sense, here are some smart tips for you to pick up right away. I’m not suggesting you to play any tricks at work, but if you are curious about why some people advance faster at work and get things done easier, maybe these are the reasons.

  1. Build a strong network for yourself

This shall never stops regardless of your experience. Build network within the company, make sure you have a strong support group from all levels. We need management support to give us work opportunities, we also need peer support to help us deliver our tasks. Ask people out for lunch / coffee, ask for their feedback / advices. Deals could be done much faster if you know the right people. Build network outside of the company too – potential partnerships or other opportunities might come.

  1. Offer help first

Just be someone helpful and nice, people appreciate that. Ask others what you can do for them, invite others to join your events, or maybe just do something helpful anonymously. If you are not able to help, always direct them to someone else you know who can help them. Or suggest some alternatives.

  1. Follow up

People are busy, forgetful, sometimes don’t bother to care. If you want to get things done, always follow up with others. Follow up frequently and don’t just shoot an email 1 day before deadline, that’s not too helpful. Chat with them (in-person / phone call / messenger), email them, make sure they have your tasks on their to-do lists and will be done on-time. It doesn’t have to be an explicit “Hey are you working on it?”, it can be something more subtle like “Hello, is there any additional info that you need?”

  1. Do things that no one else likes to do

This might or might not be related to your work, does not matter. The idea is to pick up something extra and do your colleagues some favors sometimes. I was always the one helping our department to take care of stationery, on-board new joiners, sort out meeting rooms etc. Small tasks, but people would remember you as someone helpful. Sometimes my ex-big bosses would come to me directly for those things – isn’t it a good way to build relationships or to gain some visibility? However make sure not to affect your usual work; it is not an excuse for you to slip project deadlines. And most importantly, do it genuinely.

  1. Say hi and smile first

Because no matter how ugly you think you are, when you smile you look a ton better. Be friendly, be approachable, that helps a lot with developing relationships! I don’t do this often enough, but I know it often helps with building rapport. First time you say hi, you might be still strangers to each other, but next time say hi again, you have a familiar face. I say hi to everyone regardless of their roles – pantry aunties / receptionists / security guards / peers / management. You’d be surprise how many things at work the pantry aunties could share with you!

  1. Give credits to people

Give thanks and praise often. Do it in-person, show your appreciation to the team / person who delivered their projects / achieved something / supported you. Or mention their good work to their management. Or send an email out to relevant stakeholders. Give them the credits, they will love working with you!

Important: Now that you learn about all these tips, I just want to emphasize that it is important to do everything genuinely. If you don’t care, don’t pretend like you care. Do not opt in to organize that company event just because you want some visibilities; do not fake anything. People are not dumb, others will find out.
