WIP #8: Avoid These 7 Things If You Want To Build A Solid Career

Regardless you are new here or you have been around for a while, it’s the same. These are the things that I really think we should not do at work, even if the whole world is doing that.

  1. No gossip

“Great minds discuss ideas; average minds discuss events; small minds discuss people.” Decide who you want to be. Gossip is like entertainment news at work, there is really nothing value adding to your work at all. If your colleagues start with it you can either stop them politely (suggest to change topic) or just don’t listen. Never be the one spreading gossips!

  1. No office politics

There is politic in every office, unavoidable. If you find yourself in the mid of office politics, try to zoom out from the situation and analyze first what exactly is good for the company, before you blindly take a side. Always think of the big picture and do what is right for the company.

  1. No reprimand someone in front of others

No matter how terrible someone is, never scold someone in front of others. Take him to have a private chat and find out more details from him first. If he is seriously wrong for the first time, coach him and help him out. If this is not the first time, either your earlier coaching was not effective or he is just awful to work with. Change your method of teaching or let him do something else that he is more capable of. Otherwise, let him go.

  1. No bullying

Office bully is the one that thinks he is the most experienced person in the room or has the bigger title; therefore can just step on others. That kind of attitude will not get you far at all. Today you might step on someone lower ranks than you, tomorrow this person might be your boss! Instead, treat everyone the same regardless of their corporate title / years of experience. We earn the respect from others not from corporate title but from our contribution. Always be helpful, that will get you very far.

  1. No complain

My personal rule is 70% / 30% – as long as I enjoy my work 70% of the time, I can endure the other 30%. Because there is no perfect job, even if you work for yourself! If you don’t like certain things, improve the situation. If you are not willing to do anything, don’t complain.

  1. No offload company assets

Stationery, pantry coffee, toilet papers; these are all company assets. Use them when you are in office but never bring them home for personal use without permission. You might think these are cheap stuff and it doesn’t matter to take some home, no no. It’s still company assets! Are you sure you can’t even afford to get these yourself? Negotiate for a bigger paycheck then!

  1. No office relationship

Alright this is up to you. But this always complicates a lot of things, personal or professional wise. Good luck on this!
